By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD format data is up-converted to 1080 x 1920p HD format video data. This machine hooks up easily and is simple to set up. It works well at recording tv shows and playing them back. I don't require it to do anything else. On the down side the remote allows you to go up or down through the tv channels but is not set up to select a specific channel. When selecting a channel to record the menu requires a 4 digit number ie. 0006. Also the machine will reject a disc if it thinks it's been recorded over too many times. I prefer to make that decision myself. Over all though I think it's a good deal for the money.
